Erin Calihoo is one of the many young Métis in Alberta who have benefitted from a scholarship through the Belcourt Brosseau Métis Awards. The BBMA is a permanent endowment fund at the Edmonton Community Foundation that supports the post-secondary education and skills training of Metis Albertans in financial need.
Erin received an award in 2004 and was able to complete the Radio & Television Broadcasting program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). While at NAIT, she discovered a talent for editing-a talent that landed her a position with City-TV.
Winning the BBMA enabled Erin to secure a job that she loves and to help her inspire other young Métis to contemplate a post-secondary education and to delve into their heritage. This is what the awards are all about - not just money but breaking down barriers, creating possibilities and building pride in Métis culture.
