Recognizing that recreation and play are crucial for children to develop self identity, self esteem and social skills, Edmonton Community Foundation supports several initiatives that promote healthy recreation activities for children.
Community leagues, schools or parent advisory groups can apply for grants from the Lee Community Playspace Fund to support the development or renovation of publicly accessible play spaces or parks. Priority is given to requests from low-income neighbourhoods. Edmonton Community Foundation annually matches Fund dollars with each organization.
Each summer, the Paralymic Sports Association provides week-long camps for children and adults with disabilities. A range of activities help stimulate minds and muscles in a fun, supportive and social environment. Edmonton Community Foundation granted $6,000 to the camps in 2006.
The Bissell Centre's Moonlight Bay Centre, located just west of Edmonton, offers low-income inner-city families and individuals a campground experience – and a chance to escape the daily struggle of living in poverty so they can nurture their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Edmonton Community Foundation granted more than $56,000 to Moonlight Bay Centre in 2006.
