Gerry Shimko is the executive director of the Office of Traffic Safety, a partnership between the City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Police Service. When safety concerns were raised over roadside memorials -the impromptu cluster of flowers and memorabilia that are placed at the site of a traffic fatality - the OTS looked for an alternative for family and friends who are grieving the loss of a loved one.
Gerry founded the Memorial & Traffic Safety Fund, a permanent endowment fund at the Edmonton Community Foundation. The fund was established to provide an opportunity for people to memorialize loved ones lost in traffic collisions by making a gift in their name to the Fund. He explains that while the City recognizes the need to memorialize loved ones, the fund provides an option to the roadside memorials.
The fund will contribute to research and activities to help prevent collisions. Along with its collaborative work with communities on traffic safety, the OTS funds a research chair in urban traffic safety at the University of Alberta. In the future, the Fund could be used to provide scholarships to graduate students interested in pursuing studies in traffic safety.
