In June 1977, fresh out of university and just married, Salma and Zaheer Lakhani arrived in Canada to make a new life for themselves. While they were still studying in England, dictator Idi Amin had expelled their families from Uganda. Unable to return to their country of origin, the Lakhanis came to Edmonton, supposedly for two years.

Twenty-five years late, they wanted to mark the anniversary with something meaningful. They set up the Lakhani Family Fund at the Edmonton Community Foundation to support artists, such as those at the Fringe Festival, so they can continue creating and performing in the Edmonton area.
