Board and Committees

Our volunteer Board members are responsible for the stewardship of ECF. They have diverse experiences and expertise and are passionate about the well-being and vibrancy of our City.

Board members along with other community members also serve on ECF committees that are critical to ECF operations.

Board

Our board members are appointed by the Committee of Nominators, a group selected by the following organizations:

  • Mayor of the City of Edmonton,
  • Chair of the Board of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce,
  • President of the Edmonton & District Labour Council,
  • Senior Justice resident in Edmonton of the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta,
  • United Way of the Alberta Capital Region,
  • University of Alberta, and
  • Edmonton Bar Association.

Directors of the Board are appointed for a three-year term and are eligible to serve a maximum of two terms. Terms commence and terminate on the date of ECF’s annual meeting, which is typically held in June of each year.

The Board as a whole elects a chair and deputy chair and appoints a secretary.

The Board has approved a Privacy Policy that ensures compliance with federal and provincial legislation.

  • Monelle Sturko

    Chair, Committee Chair

    Committees: Governance, Alberta Social Enterprise Venture Fund, Granting Programs

    Monelle Sturko is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Edmonton Community Foundation. She is also the Chair of the Governance Committee and a board member of the Social Enterprise Fund. Monelle’s involvement with the Edmonton Community Foundation is borne out of a desire to support and assist her community as a whole. She believes that everyone counts.

    Monelle is a litigator at the law firm of DDC Lawyers, and feels fortunate to work at a firm that exemplifies integrity and a desire to help their community.

    Monelle is also the Past President of the Edmonton Bar Association and the Chair of the Insurance North Section for the Canadian Bar Association.

    Among her many interests, Monelle has a love for Modern and Post-Modern American Literature and Impressionist Art. She also enjoys jazz, with some of her favourites being John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon and The Night Crawlers.

  • Elisa Hung

    Vice Chair, Committee Chair

    Committees: Audit, Alberta Social Enterprise Venture Fund

    Elisa Hung joined the ECF Board of Directors in June 2020. She is a CA, CPA by profession and currently holds the role of Vice President, Risk Management and Controller at Capital Power.

    Elisa's experience includes holding leadership positions in accounting, audit, risk management, budget and forecasting, long-term planning, valuations, and sustainability reporting. She also has committee and board experience with the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre, and Edmonton Women in Finance.

    During her spare time, Elisa enjoys traveling, reading, practicing yoga, and recreating favourite dishes for her loved ones.

  • Marshall Shoctor

    Secretary

    Committees: Governance

    Marshall Shoctor is completing his 6th year as Board Secretary of Edmonton Community Foundation. He was introduced to ECF by Kathy Hawkesworth (currently Counsel & Philanthropy Advisor at ECF) in 2001, when he worked with Kathy to establish a fund at ECF in honour of his late father, Joseph, and he was smitten by Kathy’s expertise and enthusiasm in service of a sensational community organization.

    Marshall was born in Edmonton, educated in Edmonton and Montreal, and had a lengthy career as a lawyer in private practice. He has spent decades as a board and committee member, officer and chair of not-for-profit organizations. Marshall tries to keep relatively fit, travels to enjoy theatre and art, and is a sucker for a great cup of coffee or glass of wine.

  • Kwaku Adu

    Director

    Committees: Granting Programs

    Kwaku Adu is passionate about uplifting marginalized individuals and alleviating poverty in our communities. Having worked front line with at-risk youth, he has a deep appreciation of how donors’ funds significantly fuel positive change.

    In his professional life, Kwaku is a lawyer in the areas of litigation, estate planning and personal injury. He also serves as a tribunal adjudicator for various colleges governed under Alberta’s Health Professions Act.

    Kwaku holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Justice Studies from the University of Regina and JD Law Degree from the University of Saskatchewan.

    Kwaku is passionate about volunteering for causes involving at-risk children / youth in care. He enjoys travelling as well as Afro-Latin music and dance.

  • Linda Banister

    Director

    Committees: Granting Programs, Governance

    Linda Banister is the former President of Banister Research & Consulting Inc., a firm providing full-service market research and program evaluation / performance measurement services to hundreds of clients in Alberta and across Canada. During her career that spanned over three decades, Linda won numerous awards and was inducted as a Fellow of two professional associations. Linda is a certified director and currently sits on several boards.

    Linda has a newfound love of dogs and while she doesn’t have one of her own, a favourite pastime is walking the pups of friends and family.

  • Jonathan Chia

    Director

    Committees: Alberta Social Enterprise Venture Fund

    Jonathan Chia is the president of Gratum Consulting, a boutique consulting firm that provides executive advisory services to small- and medium-sized businesses. Bringing a wealth of industry expertise and a deep passion for community building, Jonathan is known for his financial and strategic acumen, his ability to apply pragmatic solutions to complex problems and the pride he takes in his work. Having spent more than 20 years in a variety of senior executive roles at publicly traded and private companies, Jonathan was previously the CFO of Matrikon Inc., an Edmonton-based industrial IT company. He was also the CFO of Melcor Developments Ltd., a publicly traded real estate developer and Melcor REIT, a real estate investment trust and extension of Melcor Developments Ltd.

    A lifelong Edmontonian, Jonathan is also a devoted Oilers fan and a golf enthusiast. Jonathan and his wife have two children, who keep them fully occupied on the weekends at local hockey arenas and pools.

  • Cynthia Dunnigan

    Director, Committee Chair

    Committees: Granting Programs

    Cynthia Dunnigan is a life-long Edmontonian. She is a member of the Métis Nation of Alberta with ancestral ties to the St. Albert and Lac Ste. Anne Métis communities. Cynthia has two undergraduate degrees and a Master of Arts from the University of Alberta and has worked as an executive manager in the public service for over sixteen years.

  • Mark Korthuis

    Director

    Committees: Granting Programs, Governance

    Mark Korthuis is an accomplished leader in the social impact sector, currently serving as the President & CEO with the Glenrose Hospital Foundation.

    Mark's exceptional leadership has earned him numerous accolades, including being named one of Edmonton's Top 40 under 40 in 2020 and induction into the University of Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2021. In recognition of his significant contributions to the province, in 2022 Mark was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Medal. In his spare time, Mark loves coaching his daughter's soccer teams.

  • Leanne Krawchuk

    Director

    Committees: Governance

    Leanne Krawchuk is a distinguished member at Dentons Canada LLP's Corporate group and serves as the Co-Lead, Edmonton Corporate Practice Group. She holds positions on the Dentons Canada LLP National Board and Audit Committee. With expertise in Construction, Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) and Securities she advises on multi-million dollar complex transactions.

    Recognized for her excellence, Leanne has received numerous awards, including: The Best Lawyers in Canada, Lawyer of the Year, The Legal 500, Lexpert Special Edition. Actively engaged in the community, Leanne serves as a director of the Edmonton Community Foundation and the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business. In her leisure, Leanne enjoys music, reading books and working out.

  • Filip Ksiazkiewicz

    Director, Committee Chair

    Committees: Investment

    Fil Ksiazkiewicz is Senior Portfolio Manager, Private Assets at the TELUS Pension Plans, where he has worked for 12 years. Prior to this, Fil was the Lead Economist & Strategist at AIMCo and an Economist at Moody's Analytics in Philadelphia.

    Fil holds an M.A. in Economics from the University of Alberta. He is an avid weightlifter, having co-founded the University of Alberta Powerlifting Association in 1999.

  • Sam Narayan

    Director

    Committees: Endowment Development

    Sam Narayan has over 20 years of experience in Business and Real Estate. Today, his focus is on companies EVER Real Estate Developments as Partner & President, and RE/MAX Excellence and RE/MAX Excellence Commercial Division as Owner/Associate Broker.

    Sam is the Founder and President of the EVER Excellence Foundation, a Director of NAIOP Edmonton Chapter Leadership, is an active member of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, the International Council of Shopping Centers, a former director of the Better Business Bureau, and other Commercial memberships.

    In his free time, Sam enjoys golfing, travelling, and spending quality time with his family.

  • Jai Parihar

    Director

    Committees: Investment

    Jai has more than 35 years experience managing Pension and Endowment assets. He managed $3 billion in financial assets as the President and the CEO of the University of British Columbia Investment management Trust. Prior to that, Jai was the Chief Investment Officer of the Alberta Investment Management Corporation managing $70 billion in financial assets.

    Jai holds degrees in Engineering and Business Administration from the University of Alberta. He also holds CFA and ICD.D designations. Jai is serving on a number of Boards and Investment Advisory Committees. Jai likes to listens to Indian music and socially play game of bridge.

  • Gail Stepanik-Keber

    Director

    Committees: Endowment Development

    Gail Stepanik-Keber is a board member, former c-suite executive, business advisor, coach and entrepreneur. Gail loves the cooperative business model after spending 21 years at Servus Credit Union in key leadership positions. She is the founder of Triniti Solutions Inc, a niche consultancy focusing on purpose for business and for individuals.

    Gail is also a board member of Travel Alberta, WJS Canada, Fort Edmonton Management Company and Cashco Financial. Gail has a business degree from the UofA and a masters in leadership from Royal Roads University. Gail lives with her husband, daughter, and many furry and feathery friends on a farm in Parkland County, Alberta.

  • Drew Thomson

    Director

    Committees: Audit, Governance

    Drew has over 30 years of experience leading finance and accounting groups in the private and public sectors. Drew recently completed over a decade as the CFO of the Law Society of Alberta.

    Drew has served on the boards of the Certified Management Accountants of Alberta, Goodwill Industries Alberta, Windmill Microlending, Carbon Management Canada Research Institutes, and the Alberta Law Foundation.

    In retirement, Drew focuses his time on giving back to the Edmonton and Alberta communities and keeping fit.

  • Sherilyn Trompetter

    Director

    Committees: Granting Programs

    Sherilyn Trompetter is the Principal and Co-Founder of MT Consulting Group.

    She is a compassionate and authentic professional who has worked in various themes of diversity, equity and inclusion for over two decades. Sherilyn brings a trauma-informed approach to consulting organizations and coaching individuals and groups.

    Sherilyn has extensive community service and volunteer experience. She co-founded ACT Alberta: the Action Coalition on human Trafficking, the leading research-based and outcome-focused human trafficking organization in Alberta. She has a passion for multiculturalism, social justice and community service and has over 15 years of board experience.

  • Leon Zupan

    Director, Committee Chair

    Committees: Endowment Development

    Leon Zupan is a retired energy executive with a 30-year career with Enbridge, serving as their Chief Operating Officer with oversight of a workforce of 3500 employees in Operations, Engineering, Integrity. Leon's career has taken him to Sarnia, Ontario, Calgary and Houston but he was happy to retire in Edmonton.

    His industry leadership includes leading the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association and the Alberta Chamber of Resources and locally served as Campaign Chair and Board member for the United Way. He is Chair of the Art Gallery of Alberta Board.

    Leon and his wife Vonnie love to travel and spend time with their three children and four granddaughters.

Audit Committee

The Audit Committee helps maintain the quality and integrity of ECF’s financial reporting. They are appointed by ECF’s Board of Directors. The Committee monitors, evaluates, advises, and makes recommendations on ECF’s financial activity. This includes external audits, financial reporting, accounting policies and practices, operating budget, and any related internal control systems.

Endowment Development Committee

The Endowment Development Committee encourages the building of endowment funds to support and enrich the Edmonton community. It helps ECF connect donors to the resources they need to make the best decisions.

Governance Committee

The Governance Committee assesses the overall performance of ECF’s Board and its committees. They are in place to help manage the Board’s activity and to ensure it’s in line with stakeholders’ expectations. The Governance Committee also recommends nominees to the Board and other committees.

Granting Programs Committee

The Granting Programs Committee is appointed by the Board of Directors to support ECF’s grants and awards programs. Under this committee, several sub-committees review all grants and awards applications and make recommendations to the Granting Programs Committee.

Investment Committee

The Investment Committee supports the Board in key decision making. Its members are appointed based on a recommendation from the Board’s Governance Committee. The Investment Committee reviews investment policies and recommends changes based on their expertise. They also monitor the policies and review the performance of the fund custodians and investment managers
