Edmonton’s Food Bank – Edmonton Gleaners Association Fund
The Edmonton Gleaners Association, more commonly known as Edmonton’s Food Bank, was incorporated in 1981 and was the first food bank in Canada. Edmonton’s Food Bank primarily operates as a central warehouse providing food assistance to over 300 agencies, shelters, churches, schools, and food depots throughout the city to support their programs. Thanks to this consolidated effort, we ensure that food donations go directly to those who need it the most while reducing duplication of community efforts. In conjunction with our partner program support, we directly provide food hampers to over 25,000 people monthly with about 40% being children.
Edmonton’s Food Bank also provides job and employment preparation through our Beyond Food program that helps those without work to prepare and re-enter the work force feeling confident and ready. Beyond Food offers free employment assistance, English and math upgrading, budget advice, personal counselling, safety tickets (i.e. first aid, forklift licence, safe food handling, etc.), and much more.
We envision a community where hunger does not exist, where all citizens have access to an adequate and nutritious supply of food. We are grateful to work in unison with the Edmonton Community Foundation to grow our endowment fund with their expertise and knowledge. Gifts to this fund will be used to help Edmonton’s Food Bank live out their mission of envisioning a community where all citizens have access to an adequate and nutritious supply of food. Hunger is only a symptom of poverty and we understand it will not solve issues faced by communities affected by these issues and we hope to minimize some of the stress by ensuring those who are hungry can eat.
