Friends of Fort Edmonton Fund

The Fort Edmonton Foundation is a charity in Edmonton founded in 1969 by a small group of Rotarians, business leaders, and passionate community members. Their goal was to help preserve the history of Edmonton by rebuilding the original Fort Edmonton and creating a living history museum in the river valley. For over 50 years, with community support, volunteers and donations, the Foundation has enabled Fort Edmonton Park to be built and expanded to encompass four distinct historical eras: the fur-trade era, 1885 Street, 1905 Street, and 1920 Street.

Today, Fort Edmonton Park is Canada’s largest living history museum. It recently underwent a $165 Million enhancement project with funding from all three levels of government and the Fort Edmonton Foundation. After being closed for construction from 2018 to 2021, the Park reopened to the public in July of 2021 with the new Indigenous Peoples Experience, Front Entry Plaza and Guest Services Area, expanded 1920’s-style Midway, and many other enhancements.

The Fort Edmonton Foundation continues to help secure the financial means to tell the story of Edmonton’s beginnings by funding capital projects and initiatives at Fort Edmonton Park. The Fort Edmonton Foundation CARES initiative was developed in 2021 and focuses on expanding the accessibility of Fort Edmonton Park to children, youth, schools, and community groups that may be experiencing social or economic barriers.

We partnered with the Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) to take advantage of the Foundation’s endowment expertise. Donors work with Fort Edmonton Foundation and ECF to plan their contributions to the Friends of the Fort Edmonton Funds, to ensure their investments enable long-term growth. An endowment fund will have an investment, withdrawal, and usage policy governing it. The money in the fund is not immediately granted. Instead, your gift is invested, and a percentage is disbursed to the Fort Edmonton Foundation for its intended purpose.
