Herb Dixon Full Steam Ahead Award Fund

Herbert Abel Dixon was born in Edmonton, grew up in Grande Prairie, graduated from Pharmacy at the University of Alberta and later, with a Masters of Education. His career focused on hospital pharmacy practice at the Charles Camsell Hospital, Nanaimo Hospital and then as Director of Pharmacy at the University Hospital for over 10 years. He was active in his church as a Bible teacher and inspiring speaker, with a deep abiding personal faith. Herb had a passion for trains and volunteered at the Alberta Railway Museum, serving as President for over 25 years. Herb’s soft-spoken way of getting a group to come to a consensus was a large part of his success.  His presence, his smile, his humour and love for puns will be sorely missed. We so enjoyed his loving encouragement, sense of fun and his ability to make things happen.

This award was created to celebrate Herb’s life and continue the good work that he so enjoyed.

Herb was all about people and bringing out the best in others. With a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye, he focused on helping people to leverage their skills and abilities and overcome their challenges to achieve their goals.

The intent of this award is to, in Herb’s name, celebrate the achievements of individuals who:

  • Further the goals and objectives of relevant non-profits and not-for-profits in ways that keep the stories of their organizations alive, vibrant and relevant to future generations.
  • Demonstrate the qualities that Herb exhibited himself and encouraged in others:
    • Consistency
    • Sincerity
    • Courtesy
    • Friendliness
  • Preserve and profile the history of both Edmonton and area and the province of Alberta.

Herb was predeceased by his parents, Mel and Naomi Dixon and his first wife, Grace (Keppy) Dixon.  He is survived by his wife, Irene (Schloo) Dixon, three sons: Timothy (Debbie); Mark (Ady Dedich); Kent (Michelle); four grandchildren: Kaelyn, Jelena, Emily and Connor; and his only sister, Doreen (Dixon) Bell as well as numerous extended family and friends.
