Want to help local students?

Edmonton Community Foundation is looking for volunteers for our Hilltop Awards & Bursaries committee!

Hilltop Awards and Bursaries help post-secondary students from Edmonton and/or Northern Alberta with financial need who have a history of community involvement or leadership. Awards generally range from $1,000 to $6,000.

Volunteers play a key role in our granting work. The Hilltop Awards & Bursaries Committee reviews student award applications and provides recommendations to ECF.

To better serve communities, we are seeking to appoint diverse and balanced committees that reflect the diversity of the greater Edmonton Area. We encourage applications from Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, and members of linguistic, ethnic, sexual and gender, and other minority communities.

Volunteers can be reimbursed for expenses related to being on a committee, such as childcare or transportation, but are required to live in the greater Edmonton area.

Applications are due March 18, 2024.

Commitment:

  • Review approximately 50 applications between mid-May and mid-June and submit written feedback on each application ahead of the designated meeting to assist discussion and decision making.
  • Attend one grant decision meeting per year to finalize award recommendations (June). Meetings may occur during or after business hours, depending on when panel members are available.
  • Attend annual planning meeting to review process and discuss emerging issues (February).
  • Attend 1-2 professional development opportunities per year.
  • Attend some ECF events or informal gatherings.
  • An understanding that not all applications can be approved. While declining a request can be difficult, it is a key role of the sub-committees.

Candidates:

We are seeking 3 new members in 2024. Members are appointed for a three-year term, which may be renewed once (maximum six years). Understanding of the post-secondary education system is an asset.

How to Apply:

Send a cover letter and resume by email to studentawards@ecfoundation.org. Your application should clearly demonstrate how you could contribute to the work of the committee. Contact studentawards@ecfoundation.org with questions.

Applications are due March 18, 2024.
