Belcourt Brosseau Métis Awards

BBM AwardThe Belcourt Brosseau Métis Awards Fund was established at Edmonton Community Foundation in 2001 by the directors of the Canative Housing Corporation, Orval and Herb Belcourt and Georges Brosseau, to help Métis Albertans realize self-sufficiency through post-secondary education and skills development.

The awards, generally ranging between $2,000 and $9,000, assist those who demonstrate financial need, commitment and a desire to be gainfully employed. They cover education-related costs such as tuition, fees and books.

BBM AwardsApplicants must:

  • be Métis,
  • demonstrate financial need, and
  • intend to pursue a qualified program.

Awards are based on a holistic assessment of financial need, connection to the Métis community, and other circumstances. Priority will be given to full-time students entering their first year of post-secondary education.

Before you apply, read the Tips for Applying for Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards and check out the FAQs.

The deadline for applications for all students is March 31 of each year. To apply, students must provide the completed Application Package (PDF), two completed Reference Forms (PDF), and a copy of their most recent marks. Proof of Métis heritage must be provided before any award is confirmed.

Each year, a celebration is held to recognize the achievements of award recipients. The Awards panel, the Métis community, and corporate representatives celebrate student success at this cultural event. Recipients have told their stories and have spoken of the tremendous impact of the awards as a means of financial support and cultural connection.  For a list of sponsors and some pictures of the 2009 celebration, click here.
